Room of broken hearts
David Johnson
In this room of broken hearts
Earth’s angels greet arrivals
Moderation rules this place
Each of us has viewed death’s face
We carry with us unmet dreams
Untested skills and untried schemes
Defined only by the question “when.
We’ll reassess our future then
Change may lie beyond our ken
Too old to dance, too old to dream
Angels see us come and go
Some hearts will fail, and some will grow
These angels may not know us long
Like strangers passing in the night
These angels craft no lasting bond
For this might be our final fight
Some will move to final days
Or, rise up strong with dreams anew
And some will never change their ways,
Time to bid this life adieu
These angels at our battle’s edge
Are witness to our human strife
As stress, old habits, take their toll
While slowly draining human life
Some futures lie beyond our means
Too old to dance, too old to dream
Angels see us come and go
Some hearts will fail, and some will grow
Some move on to final days
Or, rise up strong with dreams anew
Some will never change their ways
Time to bid this world adieu
These angels at our battle’s edge
Are witness to our human strife
As stress, old habits, take their toll
While slowly stealing human life
These angels chase our fears away
Working with us as we mend
Add credence to each passing day
In this room of broken hearts.
