Your Earthly Signature
By David Johnson
When your final bell has tolled
Most mourners have dispersed
And loved ones start to speak of you
In tones still somber, but laced with mirth
To celebrate the life you led
Before you left this fragile earth
What will they say with glasses raised
What memories were treasured most
What signatures were left behind
On which to build your legacy
What grace and goodness will they find
On which to craft your final toast
And will they see the honesty
In all the things you’ve done
Your sense of humor to the end
With gentle love for all you’ve known
And endless patience, judgement naught,
For all of us who’ve been your friend
